Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, here shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
